breaking stories. the man held captive in north korea and a free man. >> here at home, as wet weather moves in several homes are flooded tonight after a watermain break. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama dates. >> the watermain broke at the top of 7 hills drive. >> alan wang is there live for

us tonight. alan, what a mess. >> yeah, dan and ama, this is one of the homes that was caught in the flood of water that came cascading down from the top of the hill. about the only thing firefighters could do is take what they could and dig trenches to divert the water let me show you what it looked like shortly after the call came in around 7:00 tonight. it was a small water leak at first, but east bay mud said it was a 12-inch main that quickly broke wide open and sent thousands of gallons roaring down the hill. it even caused a sinkhole that swallowed up a fire truck. a wrecker is trying to carefully pull it up right now. most of the water washed in the backyards backyards and into garages of 15 homes. only one home and one family had to be evacuated. with me is jennifer fisher and i understand this makeshift wall here actually saved your home. >> the firefighters took up

any land you could and made a makeshift dam so the water wouldn't go into our house. the water was rushing at a very high rate going down the street andthen turning into each property. our properties and esh's -- and everybody's homes were completely surrounded by water. >> no water inside your home? >> no water inside our home. just the first two homes at the top of the street were the only ones affected. the firefighters were able to help in saving our homes. >> good to hear that. thank you so much, jennifer fisher. right now the watermain has been shutdown. there is no water service on this street. east bay mud -- [inaudible] doesn't know how this happened. alan wang, abc7 news. >> thank you, alan. the wet weather is not helping crews there. it is raining outside. let's take a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see the slick pavement as the drivers cruise through tonight. let's take a live look from the roof cam in san francisco.

it is cold and drizzly along the embarcadero. we do have team coverage on the cold snap. we start with meteorologist sandhya patel with a first look at weather on live doppler 7hd. >> ama, weather is definitely picking up in intensity. it is tracking heavier rain and the national weather service just issued a special marine warning for san francisco south of the bay bridge over the pacific waters including the san mateo bridge and south san francisco. i'm sorry. i am just reading this to you right now. it is issued until 11:30 p.m. it looks like a strong thunderstorm has developed. i do want to take you in closer and show you the area where we are seeing some very heavy returns here in violet purple heading toward the east bay. be aware the fact the rain is come -- coming down heavily and we are seeing rain-snow mixing in over mount hamilton. you look at this and it has been snowing around the mount hamilton area and mixing with rain. we have also seen snow in ukiah and down to about 600 feet and also looking at some

snow in northern napa county and do to 1700 feet which is why winter weather advisories are up above 1500 until 6:00 a.m. for the north bay mountains and 2500 tomorrow morning 1:00 to 10:00 a.m. the santa cruz mountains the diablo range could see two to four inches of snow. this picture was sent by a viewer to you report. you can see how snowy it was. here is a picture of the dog enjoying the snow in ukiah as well. send us your photos. we will have a look at how long the snow will stick around and what is in store for your weekend. >> this is more than uncomfortable. it is deadly. abc7 news reporter nick smith continues our team coverage. it is live along hig 17. nick? >> dan, we are standing in that weather we just told you about. falling temperatures can be dangerous and even life-threatening if you don't have a way to escape the elements.

>> have i been homeless for almost a year now. >> he is one of the men we met at this san jose shelter. without a home to call his own, the cold snap blanketing the south bay has forced him and others on look for a warm place to stay. >> knowing there is a place to go when you are cold and have no where else to go and this is the right place to go when you are down-and-out. you are cold and this place will help you out. >> others haven't been as fortunate. four men each in their late 40s or early 50s have been found dead since monday in different parts of the county. >> we want to try to get folks who don't have a home into shelter particularly this weekend when it is cold. >> the temperatures fell below 30 degrees on friday and are expected to sink even lower between now and tuesday. so officials with santa clara county's homeless program have placed an additional 375 beds in the area shelters. they say that still won't be enough. >> this should never happen in this community. we should never have the heartbreak of this kind of loss. it is not necessary.

it should never happen. >> reporter: we have seen traces of snow and rain for more than two hours. so far it is not sticking to the ground. nick smith, abc7 news. >> thank you, nick. dismie -- to the north bay where napa county was hit with snow as the storm came through. and tonight cal trans plows are on stand by. john alston is live in calistoga. plenty of weather up there too. >> ama, drenching rains have been pummeling parts of wine country. we are in a bit of a lull in calistoga. earlier we took a steep drive to the top of mount saint huh lena where we saw a few snowflakes and a lot of showers. by 8:30 the rain washed away most of the snow that fell, elevation 4300 feet. for part of the afternoon the flakes were definitely falling, enough that cal trans called out the plows and put up signs warning drivers of

slippery roads at the summit. you just four miles down the evening was peppered with downpours. it was an awful trip to get just about anywhere. the west blast is unusual. >> i can get there without turning on my heat. i went home and turned my heat on. we are miserable. >> some visitors celebrating their 15th anniversary got a taste of the city they just left jie. expecting honey. it was supposed to be our wedding anniversary, and here we are like in weather just like chicago. >> to get out of the 39-degree cold, some folks jumped in 104-degree water at the calistoga hot springs. >> you get cold when you step out and then get hot when you get back in and it is good for you. >> walking back into the cold is the hard part. in calistoga, john alston, abc news. >> check this out from in mendocino county.

it has been shutdown due to snow and traffic related collisions. this picture also from cal trans is on highway 20. in the sierra chains ar required at 3200 feet for drivers on i-80. there is a winter storm warning that lasts overnight in the tahoe region. elevation above 7,000 feet and expect 1 to two feet of snow by tomorrow. it is not just in the bay area, but much of the united states is covered in ice and snow especially in the south and midwest. four people have been killed on u.s. roads since the storm hit yesterday. schools and businesses are shutdown. hundreds of thousands of people face freezing temperatures tonight. there is no power. including 200,000 customers in dallas and 30,000 in arkansas. more than 2 huynh00 flights were canceled nationwide. in the bay area, sfo canceled about 13 and arriving and 17 departing flights. several flights out of san jose were also canceled. to developing news

tonight. the palo alto veteran held captain in north korea was taken off a plane and held for moral than a month. tonight he was deported from north korea. >> he is on his way home from north korea after being held prisoner for more than a month. >> i appreciate the dprk has given. >> the 85-year-old palo alto man completed a 10-day tour of the north when agents of the communist regime pulled him off his return flight. the government claimed newman killed the north koreans from 1950 to 1953. the north korean state controlled televion saw him reading from an apparent confession. >> it attacked the communication system and killed three innocent operators and delayed the munition supply using explosives. >> his son in pasadena says he is delighted about the announcement.

mandela will be buried a week from sunday. bay area leaders are remembering the late nelson mandela. one is cecil williams of the glide foundation seen here with mandela when he visited oakland in 1990. williams was arrested at an anti-apartheid rally at cal in may of 1985. mandela said the movement helped quicken the end of south africa's white minority rule. >> he is in jail and yet he comes out of jail and stands tall and says i am not going to destroy. i came here to liberate. >> in sacramento flags are flying at half staff at the capital -- capitol biddings. the public commission is joining the investigation into this week's disabled bart train incident. nine people were hospitalized after the train became stuck in a berkeley hills tunnel. the train stopped after a short caused emergency brakes

area. this is the area where we are seeing thunderstorms developing here. this is the area that we are watching which is why there is a warning up right now. it is special marine warnings that have been issued and that means strong, gusty winds, lightning strikes and we also have a freeze warning coming up as we head into your sunday morning. it is not freezing cold tonight. you can see where the heaviest returns are right now. hayward toward san mateo and fremont and even heading down toward the morgan hill and gilroy area and over in mount hamilton we are seeing snow which explains why the winter weather advisory. interstate 80, chain control and the snow has been coming down heavily. truckee, 6 inches of snow. from the emeryville camera as we look toward the bay it is a little on the chilly side. but nothing in comparison to this morning. we had new records for the second morning. san rafael 30. 25 in napa and san francisco tied at 40. san jose 30 degrees. not expecting records once

again tomorrow morning. you can see why. temperatures are well above where they were just 24 hours ago. the view from our san mateo bridge camera, rain drops are on the ledge and it is a little rough if you you are driving or planning to head out. just keep this in mind through tonight and then things will taper. low 50s, san francisco, oakland and 48 in san jose and 50 in half moon bay. san francisco visibility is good. it is 41 in santa rosa and napa and novato and livermore 49 degrees. and check out the view. i have to step aside. it has been dumping in the sierra nevada. this is coming down from the lake tahoe cam. this is heavenly. snow here in the bay area, but not that much. over the hill, 1500 to 2500. a freeze warning goes up sunday into monday morning. so we will be looking at freezing cold conditions behind the front. the cold front is moving in which is why the rain is

intensifying. as you look at the computer animation, all is not lost for your weekend. 1:00 a.m. the rain line is shifting into well south of south bay and into the monterey bay. and then it is all done. so now it looks like clearing early for your saturday plans. could be a light shower and maybe lingering around the monterey bay. winter weather advisory above 1500 feet. north bay mountains until 6:00 a.m. for the santa cruz mountains, the diablo range 2500 foot elevation until 10:00 expecting a couple inches of snow. the north bay is already seeing clearing. you could -- ukiah the snow has cleared. expecting 24 inches in the mountains. expect major travel problems and carry your chains and even the foothills 3 to 12 inches. we have seen very low elevation snow. we will be watching that of course. tomorrow morning, not as cold. maybe a lingering shower or two.
